Market sales soar for private hearing instruments while NHS sales face a drop

BIHIMA has released Q3 data on hearing technology market figures for 2025, showing a reduction in public sales but a boost in private and ROI sales.

  • Private sales are up by 9.4% (from 124,236 in Q2 to 136,550 in Q3).
  • Republic of Ireland sales rose by 11% (from 26,202 in Q2 to 29,263).
  • NHS sales went down by 2.8% (from 451,463 in Q2 to 438,765 in Q3).

Data for quarter three of 2025 reveals a split in the UK hearing instrument sector: public (NHS) sales have dropped to 438,765 units (down 2.8% on Q2) while private sales have increased by 9.4% on the previous quarter at 136,550 units, marking one of the strongest quarterly private reports in some time.  Meanwhile, Republic of Ireland (ROI) sales also rose solidly to 29,263 units – an increase of 11% – demonstrating continued growth across the Irish market.

Paul Surridge, Chairman of BIHIMA, said: “While public sector challenges are clear and urgent, the private market is showing resilience and appetite. The growth in Ireland also hints at broader consumer confidence across the region.”

With continued strains on NHS budgets and staffing potentially delaying provision, and greater awareness around technological advances, the figures suggest that private solutions are becoming more attractive to the public.

Paul added: “We’re experiencing one of the most technologically transformative periods the hearing sector has ever seen. Artificial intelligence, advanced connectivity, and real-time personalisation are redefining how people experience hearing care. Consumers are responding to that innovation. The private sector’s growth could reflect both this need for cutting-edge technology and the desire for faster, more tailored solutions.

“Ultimately, innovation must serve everyone. Our challenge as an industry is to ensure that these advances filter through the entire system – public and private – so that no one is left behind when it comes to better hearing and quality of life.”
