UK hearing instrument sales remain static while Irish market grows

BIHIMA has released Q3 data on hearing technology market figures showing that the UK has remained level while the Irish market has experienced small but impactful growth.

  • UK market remains flat for hearing technology from Q2 to Q3
  • Irish market experiences a market product growth of 6.5%
  • UK continues to lead on the purchase of sustainable, rechargeable hearing technology

Following a turbulent transition post pandemic, the UK market for hearing instruments has flattened out throughout Q3, according to the latest data released by BIHIMA – the British Irish Hearing Instrument Manufacturers Association. The Irish market, on the other hand, has experienced a steady quarter of growth.

While the UK saw a rise in private health instrument purchases from Q2 – shifting from 105,836 to 106,919 market units (up 1%) – NHS purchases dropped from 363,723 to 362,188 (0.4%). However, there has been an overall decrease since Q3 last year: 2021 saw an overall market size of 469,107 while this year’s figures show 465,466 (a drop of 0.8%). Private units saw the biggest drop year on year, down 7.1% between Q3 2021 and Q3 2022.

The Irish hearing market has grown by 1,571 units – an impressive 6.5% since Q2 2022. It was also up 4.8% since Q3 2021. When asked about this period of growth, Paul Surridge, BIHIMA Chairman, said: “The Irish economy is working at a different pace than in the UK. We’ve seen a steady record of growth there since we came out of COVID restrictions, and we weren’t surprised to see the difference in the data. I hope to see the UK market catch up as we move towards the end of the year.”

Like previous quarters, the UK has led the way on more sustainable hearing technologies. The private market rose from 69.8% to 76.4% of rechargeable products, whereas the Irish market experienced a small drop from 41.1% to 41%. In the UK, NHS purchases of rechargeable hearing instruments did, however, decrease from 3.4% to 1.9%.

“It’s very encouraging to see the sale of rechargeable hearing technology steadily increasing in the private sector quarter on quarter. While we appreciate that the Irish market and the NHS have experienced a drop this quarter, the numbers are still strong and very promising,” said Paul.
