Increase in UK private hearing instrument sales and overall sales in the republic of Ireland for quarter three

BIHIMA has released Q3 data on hearing technology market figures for 2024 revealing both annual and quarterly growth for private hearing instrument sales and an overall increase in sales for the Republic of Ireland (ROI).

  • Private hearing instrument sales are up 9% on Q2 2024 (and up 5.8% on Q3 2023)
  • Hearing instrument sales in ROI have gone up 8.7% from Q2 2024 and 0.9% from Q3 2023
  • NHS units have decreased by 6.7% on Q2 2024 and are down 5% from Q3 2023

BIHIMA – the British Irish Hearing Instrument Manufacturers Association – has released the latest Q3 2024 data on hearing instrument usage in the UK and the Republic of Ireland (ROI), showing an increase sales to the private sector from the previous quarter.

In Q3, private hearing instrument wholesale sales increased by 9% on Q2 2024 and were up 5.8% from Q3 2023. In comparison, NHS units purchased have dropped by 6.7% compared to a promising preceding quarter.

Speaking about the data, Paul Surridge, BIHIMA Chairman, said:

“This quarter’s data is interesting as – so far in 2024 – we’ve been seeing growth predominantly in NHS hearing instrument acquisition. However, this has shifted in the opposite direction, with sales to the private sector doing very well and NHS facing a slight drop.”

The ROI has also experienced growth after a plateau in the last quarter, with sales up 8.7% on Q2 2024 and rising 0.9% on Q3 2023.

However, for the first time in several quarters, rechargeable hearing instrument sales are down across UK non-NHS and ROI.

“It’s a surprise to see a drop in rechargeable hearing instrument sales because these have remained on a steady rise up until Q3. Time will tell how this situation develops as the year closes and we move into 2025,” said Paul.
