Hearing technology and hearing loss | A look back on 2024

As 2024 draws to a close, we’ve been reflecting on a positive year for the world of hearing health. From awareness raising campaigns to greater representation for those with hearing loss, technological advancements and a consistent rise in hearing instrument acquisition, it’s been an exciting 12 months for the profession.

Here, we look back on some of the highlights and key milestones that shaped the year. We’ve seen a broad mix of activity that includes groundbreaking innovations and efforts to influence shifts in societal attitudes, coming together in a year that has showcased how the intersection of technology and advocacy is transforming lives.

1. GN Group launched The New Norm campaign

The GN Group’s innovative photo campaign captured public attention by portraying the human side of hearing loss. Using authentic stories and powerful visuals, the campaign broke down stereotypes and emphasised the transformative role of hearing technology.

The campaign mission was to not only challenge the outdated images consistently used in the media, but to also increase public awareness and encourage more people to seek hearing solutions – we believe this was an enormous success on all accounts.

2. The Health and Safety Executive kickstarted their Workplace Noise Intervention project

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) launched a major project in 2024, shedding light on the challenges of ensuring people’s hearing is well protected in the workplace. The campaign highlights the need for better communication and management of hearing protection, including advanced hearing technologies, and provides actionable recommendations for employers to create safer working environments.

Now nine months into the project, the multi-year campaign has already shared illuminating findings which can now be used to increase awareness and enforce genuine changes in the workplace.

3. BIHIMA and the Royal College of General Practitioners collaborated to improve primary care support

BIHIMA sponsored an exciting collaboration with the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) working to improve primary care support for people with hearing loss. This collaboration focused on providing GPs with better resources – including updates to a digital Hearing Loss Toolkit created with Dr Devina Maru – to identify and manage hearing issues early. The initiative emphasised the importance of routine hearing health checks in general practice to reduce delays in diagnosis and treatment.

4. The first of its kind public panel launched for people with hearing loss

BIHIMA launched the Hearing Matters public panel – a panel that consists of hearing instrument users from across the UK who will take part in quarterly consultations with a representative of BIHIMA and a special guest.

The aim of the panel is to give participants the opportunity to share their experiences, provide feedback on hearing technology and help to shape ongoing hearing health and hearing instrument projects.

Panel meetings are set to begin in January 2025, enabling hearing instrument users to play an important role in shaping hearing health campaigns and technology, but also it will ensure that we as an organisation can better support the communities that we seek to serve.

5. A groundbreaking moment for gene therapy

One of the most talked-about hearing research breakthroughs of 2024 was the gene therapy trial that enabled a baby born deaf, to hear for the first time. This landmark moment underscored the potential of genetic research in addressing hearing loss.

6. Apple moved into the hearing loss industry

Apple took major steps forward in their bid to innovate the hearing technology space, introducing features that enhance accessibility for individuals with hearing loss. While the products received praise for breaking down stigma and making assistive technology more mainstream, some critics raised concerns about affordability and long-term support. Still, Apple’s influence as the company begins its journey into the world of hearing instruments has undeniably pushed the industry forward.

7. AI continued to push exciting advancements in hearing instruments

Artificial intelligence continued to revolutionise hearing instruments in 2024. Advanced algorithms now offer real-time adjustments, improved speech recognition, and personalised settings tailored to individual users. These innovations have significantly improved the listening experience and are expected to evolve further in the coming years.

8. Consistent growth for hearing instrument sales

Our quarterly data reviews showed consistent uptake and a steady rise for hearing instrument sales throughout 2024, reflecting growing awareness and acceptance of hearing technology.

This upward trend underscores the industry’s success in helping to address both stigma and accessibility barriers – something we hope continues to grow in 2025.

9. A new wave of representation in popular culture

Representation of hearing loss in popular culture reached new heights this year. High-profile figures like Rick Astley championed campaigns that normalised hearing aids, while hit shows like The Traitors and Strictly Come Dancing featured individuals with hearing loss. These moments sparked important conversations about inclusivity.

10. Specsavers’ ‘It’s time to talk about hearing’ report

Specsavers’ ‘It’s time to talk about hearing’ report highlighted the critical importance of hearing health and its impact on overall wellbeing. The report drew attention to the growing need for regular hearing checks, particularly among older adults, and emphasised the economic and social benefits of early intervention.

Utilising the report, Specsavers also contributed to industry representatives advocating for greater investment in hearing health services and initiating conversations with policymakers to prioritise hearing care in public health strategies. Their partnership with Rick Astley’s campaign was a standout success, sparking widespread awareness and encouraging individuals to take proactive steps in addressing their hearing needs. The year also saw increased collaboration between industry bodies, signaling a stronger, collective push for change.

As we move into 2025, the hearing technology industry stands on solid ground, buoyed by the progress of the past year. With ongoing innovations, growing public awareness, and united efforts across sectors, the future looks bright for hearing health.
